Floating Skyscrapers

LGBTQ cinema

Wasilewski’s movie stirred up emotions long before its premiere, which took place in April 2014 at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. It was very well received – the prestigious American film website IndieWire rated it highly, placing it among the best European productions shown at the event. “Floating Skyscrapers” triumphed also in Karlove Vary (the Czech Republic), at the “East of the West” contest, at the T-Mobile New Horizons Film Festival in Wrocław (Poland); at the Film Forum Avvantura in Zadar (Croatia), Mateusz Banasiuk received the award for the best leading actor. Wasilewski also triumphed at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia – he was awarded in the “Young Talented Director ” category; at the same event Marta Nieradkiewicz was awarded for the best supporting actress. The film, however, divided Polish film critics. The vast majority pointed out the importance of breaking down the barriers in Polish cinema in which gay love themes had been usually rather marginalised or – at best – hidden in the background, shown with a clearly negative tinge or as an allegorical aspect.

Floating Skyscrapers” is a contemporary, universal story of growing up, searching for one’s own identity, growing to accept oneself and others. The protagonist, Kuba, is a young man, living with his mother and his girlfriend, Sylwia. Everything seems to be in its own place in his life: he is in a happy relationship, he studies and he has all the makings of a great professional swimmer. Yet, at a party he meets Michał and a strong emotional bond is born between them. It is then that Kuba unexpectedly discovers his fascination with men.
