Play.City. Readings of plays.

Ozen Yula “Good Times Are the Worst”

Pavlo Arje “The Full Moon”

Małgorzata Sikorska-Miszczuk “From Istambul with Love”

Organised by the Istanbul-based GalataPerform theatre, the Play.City project is an innovative version of the readings of new texts by European playwrights.

This year’s iteration, prepared in partnership with the Theatre Confrontations and East European Performing Arts, focuses on texts by Ozen Yula, Pavlo Arje and Małgorzata Sikorska-Miszczuk, all of whom were inspired by the contemporary situation in Istanbul. The first readings of the texts took place at the GalataPerform in the June of 2014. Prepared by the artists affiliated with the Soho Theatre, the Lublin readings constitute the Polish premiere.

SOHO Theatre

In the 2013/14 season, the Koło Theatre Studio and the Ochota Theatre located on the premises of the Soho Factory at 25 Mińska Street were christened the SOHO THEATRE. Both theatres share the same roof and the SOHO Theatre embodies the idea of the Soho Factory as an entertainment and cultural enclave. The SOHO Theatre provides a space for cooperation and compassion of authors and audiences, where time and experience are freely shared. The audiences are not only the participants but also the authors of the project; they find their own space on stage during readings, music performances or theatre activities. The reputation of the Soho Factory stage is built upon the tension on the border between institutional theatre and off theatre, hidden space and city culture, artistic haven and a space for theatre performances.

The Play.City project is carried out by Umit Ozdemir (GalataPerform) and Grzegorz Reske (Centre for Culture in Lublin) as part of the “TANDEM Cultural Managers Exchange Turkey & EU”, conducted with the support of the European Culture Foundation, Mit-Ost, Anadolu Kultur and Mercator Foundation.
